Get Long Lasting Relief for Chronic Low Back Pain *New Research

A 3-year-long, large study on chronic lower back pain was just published with some interesting results.

The premise behind the study was that most interventions for lower back pain produce small and short-term effects, but a promising new intervention called CFT showed potential for longer-term results.

CFT stands for Cognitive Functional Therapy, and is a personalized form of rehab that helps people understand their back pain, make lifestyle changes, and uses graded exposure with lots of encouragement and reassurance that it's safe to move their spines.

In other words, it provides education that movement is safe, creates a game plan that they can implement in their daily life, and shows them how to load and train their backs to help restore function.

The study compared CFT to usual physiotherapy care in regards to pain disability and pain intensity. Not only did CFT treatment result in significantly less pain and disability, but these results were sustained for the entirety of the 3 years.

The conclusion was that this sort of therapy should be scaled up and widely implemented to increase accessibility for as many people with back pain as possible.

It's amazing how an intervention that gives someone more personalized attention and care, and reassurance that they're not broken, can make a massive difference in their back pain outcomes.

The study also highlights how little our typical physiotherapy care helps those with back pain, with most being given false advice, band-aid manual therapy, and cookie-cutter stretches and exercises.

Unfortunately, the majority of my clients come to me after having a poor experience with a physiotherapist or other pain practitioner who more often than not, use strategies like these.

One client was dealing with post-partum back pain and had to curl into the fetal position just to sneeze because it was so painful. She was prescribed pain pills and told to rest, but she had a 20lb car seat to carry and obviously a new baby to take care of.

Her back pain was never going to get better like that.

So we created a stronger foundation of spine mobility and strength at a level she could tolerate and didn't look back from there. She's off pain pills, she's deadlifting over 100lbs, and regularly plays and picks up her kids with zero back pain.

Most importantly, she's confident in her back that it can handle anything she needs to and she's not worried about hurting herself.

We need to do better, and if more practitioners adopt this style of treatment, we'll be able to help more people ditch their back pain for good. If you're someone struggling with chronic back pain, make sure to find someone who implements treatment like this. (*wink wink, nudge nudge)
